Here’s Happy’s relationship chart.
It doesn’t come right out and say that Happy thinks of Lucy as his mother, but she is the one he’s closest to after Natsu, he can talk to her about his worries, and he sometimes behaves like a spoiled child with her. Lisanna is not on his chart at all.
If you’ve followed me for a while, you know that I’m a purist. I base my interpretations and opinions on the manga, the omakes, and whatever other story material I know Mashima has had a hand in. Going by the manga, it’s no surprise to me that Lisanna didn’t make Happy’s chart. In the omake, Lisanna and Natsu hatched Happy’s egg together, but there’s not any evidence that she was heavily involved in raising him afterwards.
It’s the anime that pushed the idea of Lisanna as Happy’s mom. They added the filler with Lisanna telling Natsu that as the “dad” it was his job to protect the “mom” and the “kid” right before the mission in which she “died” and her influence driving Natsu to patch things up with Happy after their argument.
I can understand why the anime team did so, but unfortunately they created unrealistic expectations of Lisanna’s role in Natsu and Happy’s lives that were not met after her return from Edolas. Mashima then gets flak for breaking promises that he didn’t make.
That’s the part that bugs me the most, honestly: that Mashima gets blamed for poor storytelling over something the anime added. I think he did mishandle Lisanna’s character somewhat in the Edolas arc, but the mismatch between Lisanna’s promised and current roles in FT is nowhere near as bad in the manga as it is in the anime.
